Fantasy Football Projections, Week 1: Wide Receivers to Watch (2010)

The month of September is here, and that means there is nothing more important than fantasy football! As if keeping track of your own fantasy picks wasn’t enough, here are a couple of wide receivers you should be aware of in Fantasy Football Week 1, whether or not they are on your team!
Fantasy Wide Receiver to Watch: Larry Fitzgerald, Arizona Cardinals
Opponent: St. Louis Rams
What to Watch For: No matter what the numbers say, Larry Fitzgerald is one of the best wide receivers in the NFL. That said, I guarantee the numbers won’t say that! While the demotion of Matt Leinart and the promotion of Derek Anderson probably means more big plays for Fitzgerald, it is highly unlikely that Fitzgerald will be the pillar of wide receiving during the 2010 fantasy football draft. While TheSportsWatchers have been wrong before, we are generally spot on when it comes projecting out wide receivers, and the future looks bleak for any Fitzgerald fantasy football owners. Of course, everyone will have a much better view of that in Fantasy Football Week 1. If you see poor play from Anderson against the Rams, clearly the writing is on the wall, and you then need to trade Fitzgerald while he still has some value.
Fantasy Wide Receiver to Watch: Randy Moss, New England Patriots
Opponent: Cincinnati Bengals
What to Watch For: TheSportsWatchers have Randy Moss finishing among the top five wide receivers in the NFL during the 2010 fantasy football season, thus the result of Fantasy Football Week 1 won’t have us debating whether or not to trade Randy Moss. However, NFL Week 1 could tell us a lot about what we are going to see from Randy Moss and whether he’s a top 5 wide receiver or just a top 15 guy. The Bengals have two young, athletic, spry cornerbacks that won’t be afraid of Moss. If they check Moss one-on-one, that could be the sign of aging and down year for Moss. That doesn’t mean you should make an early fantasy football trade of Moss if he doesn’t play well—afterall, the Bengals corners are good. But if he looks old against Jonathan Joseph and Leon Hall, perhaps you better think about supplementing your wide receiving core if you are heavily dependent on Moss in that category.
Fantasy Wide Receiver to Watch: Michael Crabtree, San Francisco 49ers
Opponent: Seattle Seahawks
What to Watch For: Watching a San Francisco 49ers-Seattle Seahawks game in Fantasy Football Week 1 is like watching your grandmother knit, but you can get some value out of this. While this is about Crabtree, don’t even watch him. Quite frankly, I have no idea as to whether or not he will be any good in the NFL, but he’s the number 1 wide receiver on this team and he’s going to get the targets no matter what. Thus, focus your attention on quarterback Alex Smith. Does he look comfortable in the pocket? Is he accurate? Is he going through the progressions? And can he hit Crabtree on the sidelines where he has been known to do some of his best work? We think Crabtree can play, but the jury is still out on Alex Smith. But if Smith still can’t get it done, I doubt Crabtree will have a season worthy of your fantasy football roster in 2010.
