The tight end position is one of limited greatness, which makes the pool of potential sleeper picks quite large. For Fantasy Football Week 1 projections, you have to really take into consideration that there a lot of new tight ends in starting positions that are probably going to be thrown into the fire pretty quickly.

Here are our Fantasy Football Week 1 sleeper picks at the tight end position:

Bo Scaife, Tennessee Titans vs. Oakland Raiders

You can be down on Vince Young all you want, but a mobile quarterback like him always seems to find the tight end when he’s in trouble. Just think about it. Donovan McNabb has always been a big tight end passing quarterback, as has Michael Vick, Jason Campbell and the late, great Steve McNair. Vince Young is no different, and he’s been throwing to Bo Scaife since his days back at the University of Texas. So even if you think the Tennessee Titans offense is something to stay away from (outside of Chris Johnson of course), you better be willing to take a chance on Bo Scaife if you’re in need of a tight end in Fantasy Football Week 1.

Jermaine Gresham, Cincinnati Bengals at New England Patriots

Has anybody seen the Patriots this offseason? Their defense is atrocious! How on Earth are they going to defend an offensive set from the Bengals that includes Terrell Owens, Chad Johnson, Jordan Shipley, Cedric Benson and rookie tight end Jermaine Gresham? The short answer is that they won’t be able to guard such a lineup. The long answer is that Jermaine Gresham may be the most difficult cover of all the guys I just mentioned. Sure he’s a rookie and we haven’t seen a stunning rookie season from a tight end since Jeremy Shockey’s entry into the NFL, but Gresham may be the next guy to be that dominant in his first year. He certainly should play the park in NFL Week 1 against a Patriots team that doesn’t have the linebackers or safeties that can match up with a tight end of his speed and quickness. Thus, Gresham is one of my favorite sleeper picks of Fantasy Football Week 1, and if you’re looking for a better matchup to start the season, you could do a lot worse than this Cincinnati Bengals rookie.
