The 2010 Fantasy Football season is here and it is already looks as if it’s going to be one heck of a season this year!
In Fantasy Football Week 1, all fantasy owners have to pay careful attention to defenses across the NFL. The fact is that nobody knows how good a defense is going to be until you see it play that season. Even with a defense as good as the New York Jets had last season, the loss of Darrelle Revis puts their entire defensive prowess into question.
Just like any position in fantasy football though, picking a defense is all about matchups. And while the two teams on our sleeper pick list may not be the most heralded defenses entering the 2010 fantasy football season, they do have some very favorable matchups in fantasy football week 1!
Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Denver Broncos
Nobody thinks of the Jacksonville Jaguars when they think about defense—and rightfully so! They weren’t any good last season, and they probably won’t be that great in 2010. However, in NFL Week 1, the Jaguars are up against a Denver Broncos team that isn’t all that scary on offense anymore. Two years removed from having two the best talents in football, the Broncos have neither Jay Cutler nor Brandon Marshall, and a guy by the name of Tim Tebow is supposed to save the day. Of course, it’s Kyle Orton, not Tebow or Brady Quinn, that will start at quarterback for Denver. While Orton has looked good in the preseason, he will only be as good as his rushing game. So far, it looks as if the Broncos has no rushing game, and in any contest in which Orton has to throw 25 or passes, I like the odds of the opposing defense having a good day for my fantasy football team.
Cleveland Browns at Tampa Bay Buccaneers
With all due respect to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, their offense stinks! I don’t know which Josh is starting for this team (okay, I do know that it’s Josh Freeman, but did you know Josh Johnson was their “viable” backup?), but whoever gets the starting job might want to have a good health insurance plan in tact. Sure, the Cleveland Browns aren’t known for shutting football teams down and they don’t exactly have the talent to be as aggressive as the New York Jets or Philadelphia Eagles. However, whenever your opposing wide receivers are rookie Mike Williams and veteran Reggie Brown, the opportunity to take a couple shots at the quarterback are fruitful and typically successful. I will be truthful, going with the Browns is risky and a cry for some serious. But if you are desperate and in need of a starting defense in Fantasy Football Week 1, the Browns defense is a DEEP, DEEP sleeper pick against the awful offense of the Buccaneers.
