For the 2010 Fantasy Football season, we are going to continue to focus on matchups. Matchups are a huge part of football, and because of that, they should be a huge part of your fantasy football strategy. As we approach Fantasy Football Week 1, we are going to continually make matchups a part of our analysis when giving you our weekly fantasy football projections. To get the ball rolling, here are our Fantasy Football Week 1 sleeper picks at the running back position.
Ricky Williams, Miami Dolphins at Buffalo Bills
When it comes to matching up running backs, it’s not an apples-to-apples comparison. It is, however, quite possible to compare the offensive line of the Miami Dolphins to the defensive line of the Buffalo Bills. Let’s make it as simple as possible. Last year, the Bills front line was so bad that they managed to finish 30th against the run. Also last year, the Dolphins offensive line was so incredible at rushing the ball, that they finished 4th in the NFL in rushing. Need I say anymore? With Ronnie Brown coming off a season-ending injury, expect Rick Williams to get the bulk of the load in Week 1. There’s a good chance he will even see any opportune wildcat snaps, giving him incredible upside when you consider just how likely the Bills are to give up a big rushing play against that unique offense.
Jamaal Charles, Kansas City Chiefs vs. San Diego Chargers
The Kansas City Chiefs don’t go all that long without finding a running back of the future, do they? In what seems like a short amount of time, Charles has easily become the Chiefs go-to running back, and he is now one of the early favorites to be a 2010 fantasy football sleeper pick. In Fantasy Football Week 1, one can expect the sleeper pick talk to grow even louder, because Charles could have a field day against this Chargers defense that finished just 20th against the run in 2009. The Chiefs certainly appear as if they have interest in running the ball a great ton in 2010. Throughout the preseason, the Chiefs have two of the NFL’s top 20 rushers, which denotes just how committed to the run the team is. Don’t expect them to veer far from that same strategy in Week 1, as we expect them to fully take advantage of a Chargers defense hat has some gaping holes among its front seven.
