During each and every week of the 2010 fantasy football season we want to discuss two people at each position and why they are on opposite ends of the spectrum for that week, and maybe for the season going forward. Here is our “Buy or Sell” post on running backs for Fantasy Football Week 1:
CJ Spiller, Buffalo Bills vs. Miami Dolphins
BUY: I am usually the first person to stay away from rookies—especially rookie running backs. Naturally, that has burned me before, including by Adrian Peterson, Marshawn Lynch, Matt Forte and Chris Johnson. However, in 2010, perhaps as the result of being burned so many times, I am taking a flyer out on a rookie running back, and that guy is CJ Spiller. Call me crazy, but I think this guy has the talent to get it done in his first year. For starters, he was probably the best player in the NFL draft this past offseason, because you just can’t replicate that kind of speed at his size. Secondly, and most importantly, this is Chan Gailey’s guy now. Gailey and his coaching staff went with Spiller, despite having two very capable running backs on the Buffalo Bills roster. That means Gailey could care less about Lynch’s ability and has little respect for Jackson as a full-time starter. With Spiller being their guy, expect Gailey to give Spiller all of the big plays in 2010. From screens, to draws, to outside runs and downfield passes, Spiller is getting all of the major plays at running back, and he has the skills to make defenses pay. In Fantasy Football Week 1, Spiller is going against the Miami Dolphins defense, a unit known for giving up big plays last season. While it’s not too easy to run on the Dolphins, it can be done, and I think Spiller will do a good job of it.
Chris Beanie Wells, Arizona Cardinals at St. Louis Rams
SELL: You know I don’t have much love for a running back when I am selling him in a week in which he is facing the St. Louis Rams, but that’s the case with Chris Beanie Wells. Wells, really hasn’t impressed me this preseason. Not that I’d be too concerned about the fact that Tim Hightower got a lot of carries, because they are going to split time regardless. However, when you just look at what Beanie has done in the preseason and account for his recent injury, how can you not be concerned about his long-term viability. Not to mention, much like CJ Spiller, Hightower will be the “do it all” running back in Arizona, as he will get receptions, trick plays, screen passes and touchdown runs—Wells won’t. So you can put a lot of stock into Wells if you want, but I’m selling mine—all of it!
