With the start of the fantasy football season fast approaching, we thought we would start breaking down Week 1 so you could begin to think about your roster before it has even been formed! Here are a couple of quarterbacks to keep your eye on in Week 1 of the 2010 fantasy football season…
Brett Favre, Minnesota Vikings at New Orleans Saints
There are 100 reasons to watch Favre in Fantasy Football Week 1, but the most pressing one is because we are not sure whether or not there will be a Favre to watch. A month ago, everybody thought the future Hall of Famer was coming back for sure, but now people aren’t quite as certain. Favre’s return seems to be in doubt because of a flimsy ankle that he injured in last year’s NFC Championship game. And if that ankle doesn’t heel, Favre may not come back on time this season—if at all. That said, I find it hard to believe that a quarterback that has toughed out as many games as him will be at home in Mississippi in Week 1 if he plans on coming back at all. Besides, we already know that Favre is a very vengeful quarterback, who tends to put up big fantasy football numbers when he’s playing against a team he has an agenda for. The fact that the Saints beat Favre in last year’s NFC title game, hurt Favre and went on to win the Super Bowl probably doesn’t rest well with #4. So I expect him to come back and give the Saints a little extra in Week 1, which means a lot of fantasy football points for your squad.
Matt Leinart, Arizona Cardinals at St. Louis Rams
Matt Leinart is the next guy in Arizona. Stepping in for a future Hall of Famer like Kurt Warner can’t be easy, and all eyes are on Leinart to see if he can fill Warner’s shoes. If Leinart gets off to a rocky start, things could go bad fast. A poor outing in Week 1 won’t sit well with Cardinals fans, which know that Derek Anderson, at the very least, has had success in the NFL as a starter—something Leinart can’t claim. The unfortunate thing here is that Leinart really has no more experience that say a Matthew Stafford or Mark Sanchez. However, fans won’t see it that way, coaches won’t see it that way, and fantasy football owners certainly shouldn’t see it that way. If Leinart looks horrible in fantasy football Week 1 against a Rams team that can’t stop anybody, then you can give up on Leinart right then and there, because his projections at that point won’t be worth a damn.
Alex Smith, San Francisco 49ers at Seattle Seahawks
Alex Smith is doing his best to revitalize his career in San Francisco. He finished last season as the clear-cut starter for the 49ers, and he enters the 2010 NFL season as a team leader. However, last year when Smith came in from off the bench, he had nothing to lose. He had already been the #1 draft pick that failed to live up to the hype, thus allowing him to approach the game of football without worry of losing anything else, because he had already been through it all. Now though, the expectations have risen again. Analysts and fantasy football projections have Alex Smith having an above-average season, leading the 49ers to a division title and curing the world global warming all in this one season. That’s a lot for this young man to carry, and one has to wonder if he’s ready for all of this pressure yet again. I have no idea, so much like you, Alex Smith will be among my players to watch in Fantasy Football Week 1.
