Fantasy Football Week 1 2010 isn’t too far away. That means you better start working on your fantasy football roster if you haven’t already. To help you make any decisions at the quarterback position, here are our Fantasy Football Week 1 Projections for quarterbacks!
Philip Rivers, San Diego Chargers at Kansas City
Philip Rivers may not travel to Kansas City with all of his favorite San Diego Chargers weapons. LaDainian Tomlinson is gone for good, and Chris Chambers didn’t even finish last season with the team. More importantly, Vincent Jackson continues to sit out, and Left tackle Marcus McNeil is also holding out for more money. So can Rivers still have a good game in Fantasy Football Week 1 if his #1 wide receiver and blindside protection are sitting at home? Yep! If Rivers and the Chargers were going up against one of the NFL’s better defenses, I wouldn’t have Rivers as one of Week 1’s top fantasy picks. However, because it’s the Chiefs, and because they have little or no pass rush to speak of, there’s a good chance that Rivers will throw for 300 yards without Jackson and/or McNeil. With Malcom Floyd in the lineup and Legedu Naanee having shown promise, that’s more than enough to take advantage of the Chiefs secondary. So Jackson or not, Rivers should be fine in Week 1.
Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons at Pittsburgh Steelers
Our fantasy football projections try to focus on matchups whenever we can, and in Week 1, the Falcons have a decided edge against one of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Steelers CB Bryant McFadden has already been banged up this offseason, and I don’t know if he’ll be 100% in Week 1. Even if he is, cornerback Ike Taylor is likely to draw WR Roddy White in a matchup. Can somebody say, “mismatch!” That’s what that is. There is no way in the world that Taylor can defend White one-on-one. Granted, he will probably get some help, but the safety can’t help Taylor out when White starts working him on the sideline, on shallow routes and against the blitz. In each and every one of those scenarios, White should win the matchup, giving Matt Ryan an easy target. And when the Steelers do decide to double White with regularity, that will open up the rest of the field for Matty Ice. That’s why our fantasy football projections have Matt Ryan going for pretty decent numbers against this once-vaunted Steelers defense. Something in the tune of 275 yards and 2 two touchdowns for Ryan seem likely given the mismatch the Falcons can take advantage of.
Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys at Washington Redskin
The Cowboys haven’t looked all that great this preseason, but then again, they never looked good in the preseason when they were winning all those dag-on Super Bowls either. Besides, there’s no need to worry about Tony Romo, because he has already proven that he is a big-time producer during the regular season. Now that Romo has a #1 wide receiver in Miles Austin, I would suspect that Romo will have one of the better years of his career in 2010. More specifically, in Fantasy Football Week 1, Romo should have no problem tearing up the Redskins secondary, even though they defended him well last season. You see, the Redskins are going through a change, and the team’s move to a 3-4 will undoubtedly leave some holes in their defense. Much like the Green Bay Packers, who switched to the 3-4 last season, the Redskins have a lot of talent and can probably overcome the newness of their defense by season’s end. But in Week 1, the flaws will be apparent and Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys should take advantage of them. Our Fantasy Football Week 1 Projection have Romo putting up big numbers, in the neighborhood of 300+ yards and 3 touchdowns against this “new” Redskins defense.
