As we enter the 2010 fantasy football season, it’s evident that there are only a few names worthy of big time consideration week in and week out. Those names are the same three guys that finished at the top of the leader board last season: Vernon Davis, Dallas Clark and Antonio Gates. Sure, each week we will have some newcomers do their thing, but at the end of the year, I find it hard to believe those three guys won’t be among the top 4—at least!
That said, there are some other good tight ends out there, but the fact that they are not among the top 3 should tell you that they can’t be depended upon from week to week. In fact, in Fantasy Football Week 1, we have on tight end that you should consider sitting this week.
Jason Witten, Dallas Cowboys at Washington Redskins
I have all of the respect in the world for Jason Witten. I think he’s a great tight end with tremendous skill and a whole lot of upside. However, his team doesn’t appear to think of him the same way. Year after year, the Dallas Cowboys fail to use Witten as adequately s they should. Witten is a nightmare matchup for a linebacker and he is far too big for safeties. He should be among the tight end leaders when it comes to receptions, yards and touchdowns, but that hasn’t been the case for a couple of seasons now.
In our Fantasy Football Week 1 Projections, we don’t have the Cowboys getting any smarter. Of course, it doesn’t help that the Redskins have some pretty talented players at the safety and linebacker positions, which would make it more difficult than usual for Witten to get open. Nevertheless, Witten’s downfall this week will have more to do with a struggling Cowboys offense and Witten’s offensive coordinator’s propensity for not throwing the football to his tight end. I understand that if you have Witte on your fantasy football team, then you probably didn’t feel the need to have another tight end on your roster. However, there are some other options out there, and I think you might want to consider them before automatically giving Witten that starting spot in Week 1.
