Fantasy Football Week 1 (2010) is almost here! While you have to wait for the actual games to be played, you shouldn’t have to wait for the Week 1 fantasy football projections! So we’re bringing out the stat books and looking into our crystal balls to see what’s going to happen in the first week of the 2010 NFL season.
Here are the Fantasy Football Week 1 Projections for the quarterback position:
1. Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints vs. Minnesota Vikings
Drew Brees is coming off a wonderful season in which he finished with the second most fantasy football points among quarterbacks, and didn’t even play complete games down the stretch. Going up against a Vikings team that is sure to be amped up to revenge their loss to the Saints in last year’s NFC Championship would be a daunting task for most quarterbacks, but Brees is above that. He has a stable of weapons around him, including a new and improved Reggie Bush, and Brees has been intent on taking his game to the next level. Call me crazy too, but the only thing that’s missing from Brees’s resume is an MVP trophy, and I have a feeling that the 2010 fantasy football season is the year he goes after it!
2. Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers at Philadelphia Eagles
Aaron Rodgers was last year’s quarterback king, narrowly beating Brees out for the quarterback scoring title in fantasy football. Rodger’s 2009 season was no fluke, especially given that he was almost as good in 2008, as well. In Fantasy Football Week 1, Rodgers will get a chance to put the doubters to rest against a Philadelphia secondary with a lot of holes in. Outside of cornerback Asante Samuel, every defensive back on the Eagles is vulnerable, and even Samuel is susceptible to the double move. This doesn’t bode well for an Eagles team that loves to blitz and loves to blitz often. And when the Eagles blitz at the wrong time, Rodgers is likely to burn them for the big play, if not the touchdown.
3. Philip Rivers, San Diego Chargers at Kansas City Chiefs
Rivers is entering the 2010 fantasy football season possibly without two of his most vital offensive players; WR Vincent Jackson and LT Marcus McNeil. Jackson will miss Week 1 for sure, since the league suspended him for a DUI he obtained during the offseason. McNeil, on the other hand, could hold out to see how long the Chargers will let their quarterback get nailed in the head before they bring him back to the team. Unfortunately for McNeil, Week 1 might not go according to plan, because the Chiefs defense is about as soft as a marshmallow, and even though they have a new coaching staff and some veteran defensive players, the Chiefs have a long way to go before they can derail the passing game of Rivers, Antonio Gates and Malcom Floyd.
4. Eli Manning, New York Giants vs. Carolina Panthers
The Carolina Panthers actually had a fairly good pass defense last season—or did they? Sure, Carolina finished fourth against the pass a season ago; however, they also finished 22nd against the run because they could never stop it. While the Giants running game wasn’t spectacular last year, we know they have the talent to pound the ball, and Carolina knows that too. Expect the Panther to come out hell bent on stopping the run, and Eli Manning, who is coming off his best season ever, will take advantage of those run-oriented defenses with the playaction fake. Now with Hakeem Nicks and Steve Smith-NYG looking like really good wide receivers, it’s quite possible that Manning will be prolific in more than just Week 1 of the fantasy football season.
