Ah, the first week of fantasy football. You know who you’re starting at quarterback, running back, tight end, and I’m sure you’ve got your defense figured out too. But those damn wide receivers sure do make things tricky, don’t they?

Well, don’t fret. We have your fantasy football Week 1 projections for wide receivers covered! Here are our projections for the top receiving performances in Week 1 of fantasy football.

Terrell Owens, Buffalo Bills at New England Patriots
Okay, so the T.O. show probably didn’t help us take the man any more seriously, but regardless of that, the man can still play some football. And with T.O. now catching passes in Buffalo, you better take advantage of his abilities while the weather is still warm. That said, expect T.O. to have something special in Week 1 of fantasy football. First of all, he will be on Monday Night Football, and historically speaking, Owens puts up tremendous numbers in national games like this one. Secondly, Owens is going up against Randy Moss. The two of them have a purely on-field rivalry that traditionally brings the best out of both of them, and typically, Owens wins the battle. Lastly, the Patriots really aren’t all that solid at cornerback, and I don’t think they can guard Terrell Owens one-on-one, which is what they will try to do early on in the game. Sure, the Patriots will win this game in a route, but just like the 2005 Super Bowl, T.O. will get his numbers.

Randy Moss, New England Patriots vs. Buffalo Bills
Speaking of Mr. Moss, expect him to show up big for the Moss-T.O. battle as well. You know Moss has been licking his chops for a chance to catch a pass from Tom Brady again. The last time these two were on the field during the regular season for an entire game, they were completely unstoppable, going for 50 touchdown connections in 2007. While I don’t think they will have quite the fireworks this year that they had then, they certainly will have games where they resemble that same spark, and certainly, the Buffalo Bills pass defense will give them the chance to do so. The Bills pass defense finished 13th a season ago, but that was mainly because of a lack of explosive passing teams in their division. And when you look at the quarterback efficiency rating against the Bills defense in 2008, they were in the bottom half of the league. Not to mention, offenses completed 61% of their passes against them. So if you ask me, the Bills just don’t have a chance of stopping Brady and Moss in Week 1, and that’s why the good money is on Randy Moss going for big fantasy football numbers to open the season.

Reggie Wayne, Indianapolis Colts vs. Jacksonville Jaguars
Reggie Wayne is now THE man in Indianapolis at the wide receiver position. Sure, he has been the better receiver there for years now, but out of respect, Marvin Harrison had held down that right flanker position during the past couple seasons. However, with Harrison gone, that position now goes to Wayne, and that makes all of the difference in the world. With Wayne moving over to that spot, he is now on Peyton Manning’s right side, and he will be running all of Manning’s favorite routes and schemes that Manning used to run with Harrison. There really isn’t a big enough emphasis on a right-handed quarterback throwing to his right, mainly because the best receivers are usually placed on the side of the field that favors a quarterback’s strong hand. But let me assure you, Wayne’s move to the right side of the field is very big, and he might have one of his best fantasy football seasons ever. And what’s a better way to start such a season than with a Week 1 trouncing of the 24th ranked Jaguars’ secondary?

Larry Fitzgerald, Arizona Cardinals vs. San Francisco 49ers
How can I not give Fitz some big love after the run he had last season? Heck, how can I not give him some big love against the hapless defense of the 49ers? The 49ers ranked 20th against the pass last season, but even worse, they allowed quarterbacks to complete 60.7% of their passes while giving up a quarterback efficiency rating of 85.0. To add even more fuel to the fire, Kurt Warner lit up the 49ers on both occasions last year. Granted, Fitzgerald did not have very good days against the 49ers defense, however, I anticipate Fitzgerald being quite aware of that. And I’m sure he has a chip on his shoulder as he enters the first week of the season against a team that pretty much kept him check in 2 games last season. So if I were you, I’d bet on Fitzgerald’s motivation, and not the secondary of the 49ers.
