As we get deeper and deeper into the 2009 fantasy football season, sleeper picks are becoming more and more important to the success of your team. After all, most of us all have at least one spot on our roster where we wish we had a better player. So the key to filling that void is to go after the most unlikely to player to have a big day and have him have a big day.
How exactly do you do that?
Look at the matchups!
Here are our Week 9 fantasy football sleeper picks at the quarterback position:
Matt Hasselbeck, Seattle Seahawks vs. Detroit Lions
I know Matt Hasselbeck did not come through for you against the Dallas Cowboys, but the Detroit Lions ought to be a much easier defense to take advantage of. After all, the Lions did just lose to the St. Louis Rams, and it is not as if the Seahawks don’t have weapons for Hasselbeck to take advantage of. T.J. Houshmanzedah is a huge matchup problem for the Lions, and Julius Jones might be able to make some headway against a Lions defense that got beat up by the Rams just last week. Those guys, along with tight end John Carlson and wide receiver Deion Branch, should make it an easy day for Hasselbeck, and that’s why he is one of my top sleeper picks of fantasy football Week 9.
Matt Cassel, Kansas City Chiefs at Jacksonville Jaguars
Cassel hasn’t had the greatest of seasons, but he has made some plays here and there and he definitely stays away from costly mistakes. Certainly, his 8 touchdowns and 5 interceptions aren’t eye-popping, but you usually don’t see favorable touchdown to interception ratios on teams with little to no talent, thus I really like what I have seen from Cassel thus far. And in Week 9, Cassel may have his chance at a more prolific day. The Chiefs face the Jaguars, a team that is full of holes and has allowed some pretty big days through the air this season. The Jaguars have the 26th ranked pass defense, allow 242 passing yards per game and allow a quarterback rating of 100.8. While I don’t expect Cassel to come through with Manning-like day, he will definitely put up better than average numbers to get you though Week 9 if your best quarterback is sidelined by injury or the bye week.
