Tight ends continue to disappoint us every week. I’m fortunate enough to be able to choose from Brent Celek and Vernon Davis from week to week. Two weeks ago, Davis gave me nothing, so I benched him in favor of Celek this past week. Of course, Celek gave me nothing, so I am benching him favor of Vernon Davis here in Week 12. If you saw our top picks for this week, Vernon Davis was among them. However, in our fantasy football Week 12 predictions, I’m still showing some love for the tight end out of Cincinnati.
Brent Celek, Philadelphia Eagles vs. Washington Redskins
Celek didn’t come up with big night against the Chicago Bears last week, but there is plenty of reason to believe that he can do some damage to the Washington Redskins. Granted, Celek did nothing against the Redskins in their prior meeting this season, but I don’t think it was because the opportunity wasn’t there. Quite simply, the Redskins lack the depth at cornerback to truly defend Celek. They will have to pay too much attention to Jeremy Maclin, Jason Avant and DeSean Jackson, who burned them on 2 occasions back in Week 7. With that kind of focus on those guys, the Redskins will have to deploy a linebacker on Celek throughout much of the game, and in all reality, that is a matchup that the Eagles usually take advantage of. So if Celek disappointed you last week, rest assure, that he’ll return to his usual 9 or 10 point game in Week 12 against a Skins defense that will have its focus on everyone but him.
Jeremy Shockey, New Orleans Saints vs. New England Patriots
The Saints have a big game against the Patriots this Monday night, so big-time players have to step up. While Shockey hasn’t be regarded as a big-time player in quite some time, he certainly is no stranger to the role. And in a game in which the Patriots are sure to focus on stopping the Saints running game and limiting Marques Colston, there are going to be plenty of opportunities for the secondary Saints wide receivers to step up and have big games. Enter Jeremy Shockey, who should have the best matchups of them all, as there is not a single linebacker on the Patriots team who should be able to guard Shockey by his lonesome. So go ahead and go with the veteran this week. Sure, he has let you down throughout the season, but in a big game, I think he will show up with one of his better performances of the year.
