#2 Fantasy Football Quarterback: Philip Rivers, San Diego Chargers
Say what you will about Rivers’ sub-4,000-yard passing season in 2008, but you won’t find a player that was more efficient at passing the ball given the opportunities that he had with the Chargers last season. Rivers led the NFL in quarterback rating, and during the Chargers last four games of the season, I’m not sure that there was a better quarterback in the NFL.
So what can expect from Rivers during the 2009 fantasy football season? The same thing he gave you last season, only this time, he will probably throw more than the 34 touchdowns he had last year. LaDainian Tomlinson should be healthier this year, and they are less likely to feel the pressure to run the ball with LT as much, which should allow him to help Rivers out in the passing game. Not to mention, the Chargers will definitely use the services of Darren Sproles in the short-passing game, after he proved to be an extremely explosive weapon out of the backfield during last year’s playoffs.
The development of the Chargers receivers will also add to Rivers performance from a year ago. Vincent Jackson truly stepped up as a major receiver last year, and proved to be as much of down-field threat as he is as a possession receiver. And Chris Chambers, although coming off a bad year, should be over last year’s ankle injury, and because he is in a contract-year, he should be a much more determined player in 2009.
Thus, I like Rivers prospects as the second-best quarterback entering 2009 fantasy football drafts. With the defense likely to be much improved from a year ago, he should see more offensive possessions, thus giving him the ability to make even more plays, as he so often did last year. My fantasy football prediction for Rivers has him racking up 4,000 yards and 40+ touchdowns (yes, 40!), as the Chargers will likely become a pass-first team, as they move away from the revolving the offense around LT’s ability to run the ball.
