#10 Fantasy Football Quarterback: Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys
Yes, I expect Tony Romo to take a big step back in 2009. Last year, Romo was a top 3 guy entering the fantasy football season, now he’s lucky to be in the top 10. After a season riddled with injury, losses and very questionable protection of the football, Romo’s stock is about the only thing that fell more than the Dow did last year.
Don’t get me wrong, Romo is a good player, and last year was only his 3rd season as the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys. Thus, maybe what we saw last year was just a young quarterback going through growing pains.
But maybe it’s not. I mean at what point are you what you appear to be? Romo threw 14 interceptions in 13 games last year, while fumbling the ball 5 times in addition to that. Yes, he had a quarterback rating of 91.4, mainly because of his high yards/pass average, but his completion percentage has dropped off 2 years in a row and he is holding on to the ball entirely too much, as evidenced by his 20 sacks in just 450 attempts last year.
Despite the apparent question marks with Romo, there is no questioning his ability to create the big play. Romo had 48 pass plays of 20 yards or more last season, and his 7.7 yards per pass attempt ranks among the best quarterbacks in the league. It’s because of that big-play ability that in 5 out of his 13 games, Romo went over the 20-point mark (ESPN Standard Fantasy Football Scoring). The downside is that Romo had 3 games where he didn’t even get into double-digits, and 3 games where he scored less than 15 fantasy football points.
Of course, Romo may be even more inconsistent during the 2009 fantasy football season now that Terrell Owens is gone. There is no question that the loss of Owens significantly hurts the Cowboys offense. While Romo had 48 20-yard plays last year, Owens was responsible for 31% of those plays, and T.O. accounted for 55% of Romo’s plays over 40 yards. The loss of Owens will certainly bring Romo’s averages back to Earth.
That is unless of course Roy Williams can step up and be the player he showed everyone he could be with the Detroit Lions. At his best, Roy was a Pro Bowler, and if he can be that for the Cowboys, then Romo can continue to be the gunslinger that he has been in the past. That will still probably result in some God-awful games for Romo, but at the end of the day, his numbers will translate into top-10 quarterback type numbers, but once again, that projection is riding on the services of one Roy Williams.
