Fantasy Football Pre-Season Quarterback Rankings: #3 - Peyton Manning, Indianapolis Colts

#3. Peyton Manning, Indianapolis Colts

Like I said when I named Tony Romo the #2 quarterback, Romo has a little more upside to him than Manning does.

Sure, Peyton Manning was throwing for 40+ touchdowns back in his hey-day, but that day may have passed with the aging of wide receiver Marvin Harrison, and the departure of a true go-to #3 wide receiver coming out of the slot.

Marvin’s age clearly caught up with him last year, even before the injury. And that in and of itself will limit the types of the advantageous coverages Manning was used to seeing back in Harrison’s prime when he had dual threats with both of his wideouts.

Not to mention, with Joseph Addai seemingly turning into a go-to running back, it may be hard for Manning to justify throwing the ball as much as he did in his 2004-record breaking season.

When you add all of those up, I think most people have to come to the conclusion that Peyton Manning will have his work cut out for him if he wants to put up more fantasy football points than Romo.

But don’t get me wrong, while Romo may have more upside, Manning has far less downside. You never know what could happen to Romo this season. He could prove to be a one-hit wonder with no staying power. He could get hurt. He could even be tempted by the pro-football evils of Jessica Simpson.

Who knows?

But what we do know is that Peyton Manning will be there in the end. He doesn’t get injured, he doesn’t have long stretches without putting up serious fantasy points, and he rarely ever has a terrible game that makes you wish you had started someone else in his places.

So while you will continually see Manning and Romo duke it out for #2 on my weekly fantasy football prediction rankings, always know that while Romo will be more likely to put up huge games this season, it will be Manning who proves to be the more consistent player.

#2. Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys
#4. Carson Palmer, Cincinnati Bengals
